FELC Student Assessment Policy

In order to ensure that students have the required language competencies to achieve program outcomes, an assessment test will be administered prior to admission.

Enrolment in a Test Preparation Program

A student who wishes to enrol in a Test Preparation program will take an assessment test in the form of a released IELTS or TOEFL test administered by FELC, referred to as a Test Preparation Assessment Test (TPAT).

  • A student who achieves a minimum score of 4.5 on a TPAT will be enrolled in a Test Preparation (IELTS) program.
  • A student who achieves a minimum score of 60 on a TPAT will be enrolled in a Test Preparation (TOEFL) program.

In the case that a student does not meet the minimum assessment test score required for enrolment in a Test Preparation (IELTS) program or Test Preparation (TOEFL) program, the student will be directed to take an English Language Training Assessment test and be subject to the same enrolment conditions as students being admitted to an English Language Training program or an English Language Training and Test Preparation program, outlined below.

Enrolment in an English Language Training Program or English Language Training and Test Preparation program

A student who wishes to enrol in an English Language Training program or English Language Training and Test Preparation program will take an assessment test in the form of FELC’s English Language Training Assessment Test (ELTAT).

  • A student who achieves a minimum score of 20 on an ELTAT will be enrolled in an English Language Training program or English Language Training and Test Preparation program.

In the case that a student does not meet the minimum assessment test score required for enrolment in an English Language Training program or English Language Training and Test Preparation program, the students will be directed to the Student Advisor to discuss other options.

Late-start Enrolment in an English Language Training Program or English Language Training and Test Preparation Program

In the case that a student wishes to enrol in an English Language Training program or English Language Training and Test Preparation program after the start date of the English Language Training course (Week 1), they may take an ELTAT.

  • A student who achieves a minimum score of 40 on an ELTAT is eligible to be enrolled at Week 14 of the English Language Training course (Level 2).
  • A student who achieves a minimum score of 60 on an ELTAT is eligible to be enrolled at Week 27 of the English Language Training course (Level 3).

IN-COURSE ASSESSMENT AND PROGRAM COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

In order to ensure that students achieve program outcomes, students will be provided with written feedback based on evaluations of coursework and performance on assessment tests.

Test Preparation (IELTS) and Test Preparation (TOEFL) Courses

A student will receive written feedback at the end of each of Weeks 1-12 of the Test Preparation (IELTS) or Test preparation (TOEFL) course, through an evaluation of a weekly coursework portfolio.

In Week 13, a Test Preparation Assessment Test (TPAT) will be administered.

  • In order to earn a Certificate of Completion for a Test Preparation (IELTS) program or an English Language Training and Test Preparation (IELTS) program, a student must achieve a minimum score of 5.5 on an IELTS TPAT.
  • In order to earn a Certificate of Completion for a Test Preparation (TOEFL) program or an English Language Training and Test Preparation (TOEFL) program, a student must achieve a minimum score of 80 on a TOEFL TPAT.

In the case that a student is enrolled in a variable-hour program wherein a weekly evaluation of coursework will not take place before 30% of a student’s total program hours, an additional evaluation of coursework with written feedback will be provided individually to a student at 25% of total program hours.

English Language Training Courses

A student will receive written feedback on weekly coursework at the end of each of Weeks 1-12, 14-25, and 27-38.

In Week 13 and Week 26, an English Language Training Assessment Test (ELTAT) will be administered and students will receive written feedback.

In Week 39, a final ELTAT will be administered.

  • In order to earn a Certificate of Completion for an English Language Training program, a student must achieve a minimum score of 80 on an ELTAT.
  • Students enrolled in an English Language Training and Test Preparation (IELTS) program or English Language Training and Test Preparation (TOEFL) program must achieve a minimum score of 80 on an ELTAT in order to begin a Test Preparation (IELTS) course or Test Preparation (TOEFL) course without first consulting the Student Advisor.

In the case that a student is enrolled in a variable-hour program wherein a weekly evaluation of coursework will not take place before 30% of a student’s total program hours, an additional ELTAT will be administered individually to a student at 25% of total program hours.
