Our approaches to IELTS speaking section and IELTS writing section

Providing a balance of rich course content and relevant course format, Franklin is one of the leading colleges forIELTStest preparation in Vancouver.
At Franklin,IELTSprep courses are taught with material unavailable on the market.  Compared with other English schools and language services, we are able to provide a greater amount and variety of materials useful in preparing students for theIELTStest.

Our Reading and Listening courses provide students with access to such a variety of resources that they are able to take advantage of the overlap betweenIELTStest topics to develop their vocabulary and background knowledge.  We have an abundance of materials for the Speaking section of theIELTStest as well, and our Speaking course includes practice in spoken English drawn from over 50 Speaking tests covering a wide range of topics, many of which come from actual topics on recentIELTSexams.  At Franklin we believe that another important quality of a prep school is that, rather than being just another English school, it provides students with similar conditions to the actual test for which they are preparing.  To achieve this goal of giving students an education that completely prepares them for theIELTStest, we work to recreate exam conditions by including timed practice in our Speaking and Reading courses.

What is the CAEL Test?

The Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) is a standardized test of English for academic purposes. It is designed to assess the language level of test-takers planning to study at Canadian colleges and universities.

TheAssessment tests ability to use English as it is used in Canadian universities and colleges. It allows test takers to experience what it is like to participate in a Canadian post-secondary classroom.

TheAssessment offers a unique alternative to other standardized tests of English because it is a topic-based performance test. It comprises an integrated set of language activities. Test takers read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions and write a short essay – all on one subject.

The language tasks and activities in theAssessment are systematically sampled from those which are commonly undertaken within the academic community.

The content for the tasks on theAssessment is drawn from introductory university courses, at times when professors are introducing new topics to their students, with the expectation that the students know little or nothing about the content.

TheAssessment comprises tasks that characterize academic study, for example:

  • speaking about academic experience, information or understanding

  • reading and applying information from academic articles and texts about a particular topic

  • listening to a lecture, taking notes, transferring or applying information on the same topic as the readings

  • incorporating what has been learned from the lecture and readings in writing a formal, academic response to an academic task

TheAssessment is available in a number of locations around the world, including many where other standardized tests are not available (e.g., Iran, Cuba, Greenland). It is also offered at test sites throughout Asia and Europe.

CAEL Assessment results are accepted by most Canadian and many American and European universities and colleges.

The fee for taking theAssessment inCanadais $140.00 CAD. For information about the fee for taking theAssessment outsideCanadacontact your local test centre or theAssessment Office.

TheAssessment was developed in 1987 at Carleton University, in response to requests from the faculty and a motion of the University Senate, to provide an alternative to other standardized tests. TheAssessment was designed to more effectively identify students who could participate actively in academic study. Since its first use in 1989, test takers in many parts of the world have taken theAssessment as part of the process of admission to universities and colleges in Canada, Europe, and the United States.

TheAssessment is managed and run by the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Carleton University. Under the auspices of the Language Assessment and Testing Research Unit (LATRU) at Carleton University, theAssessment Advisory Board evaluates the quality and appropriateness of testing practice in the development, analysis and use of theAssessment.

Our Elite SAT Program skyrocketing Your SAT I Score Well Above 2000

90% of students who attend SAT Prep courses at Franklin get a SAT I score above 2000. This is accomplished through a mixture of practice and skill-building. Franklin’s Elite SAT Prep courses offer greater depth in SAT vocabulary building, which facilitates both SAT reading and SAT writing.

Franklin Elite SAT prep courses are taught using material based on REAL SAT TESTS. A strong focus on SAT vocabulary building helps our SAT students to succeed on the SAT I.

Often ignored in preparation for the SAT Reading Section, the key to succeeding is, quite simply, understanding the SAT reading passage. With guidance, this is not as difficult as SAT students often imagine it to be. Through the process of active reading, Franklin’s Elite SAT students are able to predict many of the questions—and their answers—before getting to the questions. With a deeper understanding of rhetoric, reading SAT passages and answering SAT questions becomes less time-consuming. An added bonus to this approach to the SAT Reading Section is that getting a score of 6 on the SAT essay becomes much easier in the process.
